This post was last updated on February 21st, 2014 at 09:02 pm

The other day I posted about the new VCP-Desktop exam and listed some information about each of the VMware Certified Professional-level exams, but I didn’t much about list the requirements to take each exam.  I have listed those requirements here, pulling all data from the latest available blueprint for each exam.

Data Center : VCP5-DCV

Exam: VCP5-DCV
If VCP5-DT or VCP-Cloud then no req

If VCP4 then minimum req: vSphere What’s New 5.x
Note: I list a min requirement because you could also take one of the classes in the next list

If not VCP4 but attended:
vSphere Fast Track 4.x
vSphere Advanced Fast Track 4.x
vSphere Automation Fast track 4.x
vSphere ICM 4.x
vSphere Troubleshooting 4.x
then minimum req: vSphere What’s New 5.x
Note: I list a min requirement because you could also take one of the classes in the next list

If none of the above then req to take one of these classes:
vSphere ICM 5.x (5 days)
vSphere Fast Track 5.x (5 days)
vSphere Optimize and Scale 5.x (5 days)
vSphere Troubleshooting Workshop 5.1 (5 days)
vSphere with Op Mgmt: Fast Track 5.1 (5 days)

Cloud : VCP-Cloud

Exam: IaaS
If VCP5-DT or VCP5-DCV then no req
Note: Only VCP5-DT or VCP5-DCV holders are allowed to take this exam

Exam: VCP-Cloud
Req to take one of these classes:
vCloud Director ICM 5.1 (3 days)
vCloud Deploy & Manage the VMware Cloud 1.5 (4 days)

Note: this means if you want to be tested on vCloud Director 5.1 (VCP-Cloud exam) instead of 1.5 (IaaS exam) you must take a class regardless of your existing certifications.

End User Computing : VCP5-DT

Exam: VMware View
If VCP-Cloud or VCP5-DCV then no req
Note: Only VCP-Cloud or VCP5-DCV holders are allowed to take this exam

Exam: VCP-Desktop
Req to take one of these classes regardless of existing certifications:
View ICM 5.x (4 days)
View Desktop Fast Track 5.x (5 days)

  1. Preetam says:

Isn’t it sad that you have to sit vCLOUD course just to become IaaS

    • JAndrews says:

No, if you sit a vCloud course you can take VCP-Cloud. If you have sat a vSphere or View class and passed VCP5-DCV or VCP5-DT then you can just take IaaS to get your VCP-Cloud certification.

Note also that the Cloud path (with the 3-day ICM) is the quickest and cheapest way into the VCP world.
